Satchmo

Satchmo is a border collie/pointer mix with some greyhound thrown in. He was born in May, 2008. By the time he was 2 ½ months old he had been rescued from death row at a shelter and survived an illness where he was given under a 30% chance to live. He is my miracle dog. He likes to chase, herd and point at birds and loves to play ball and tug. But what he loves most of all is to SWIM!

His first DockDogs competition (and jump off of a dock) was at the Lily Pons in September, 2009, where he “jumped” 1’3”. This was also the start of his “victory” swims and it took 15 minutes and a man in waders to get him out of the water. He loves to swim, splash and evade anyone attempting to catch him, including me when I go in the water after him. He isn’t a high jumper but he is pretty as he flies through in the air. If he could, he would dive and swim everyday and I think he may be trying to slowly dig a pool in my backyard. His personal best jump of 24’10” was achieved at the Richmond event in August, 2011.

Satchmo also takes obedience, rally, and agility classes and has started monthly herding lessons. He continues to work on socializing with other dogs (which he finds to be scary) and has made huge progress (thanks in part to his experiences dock diving).

He earned his Rally Novice (RN) title in AKC Rally Obedience in October, 2011 and his Rally Level 1 title in APDT Rally in November, 2011.
